Opportunities in the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences

The Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences unites experts in Chemistry, Colour Science, Food Science & Nutrition, Mathematics, Nanotechnology, and Physics & Astronomy. With more than 130 years of history, it is now one of the UK's largest scientific research centres, with a world-class reputation for the quality of our work, spanning the most diverse and far-reaching range of subjects, covering the limitless expanse of space and the minute world of sub-atomic particles.

The Faculty has one of the largest student cohorts in the area of mathematics and physical sciences in the UK, with approximately 2,400 students. A significant proportion of students come from overseas, covering over 50 countries, which reflects the global appeal of our provision.

Our research is focused on both the fundamental development of scientific and mathematical knowledge, and the application of science to meet the needs of industry and the consumer. Whether it be exploring for the origins of cosmic rays, developing high-performance food packaging or creating anti-cancer drugs, our research work covers a wide range of areas which affect many parts of our lives, from pharmaceuticals and food production to financial management and electronic systems.

The quality of our research is internationally renowned, as indicated by the last Research Assessment Exercise, where all our Schools were judged to be undertaking 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' research, helping to position the University of Leeds in the top ten UK institutions for research power, a measure of both the quality and volume of research carried out.

This Faculty consists of four Schools:
